Founding Principles of
Hong Kong Academy

Hong Kong Academy's Founding Principles set forth the purposes for which the school was established. We believe that these principles will have a profound impact on the way people think and act; that they should guide each and every aspect of practice in our school community; and that by modeling them we all will become more informed, caring, and fulfilled members of an increasingly complex and interdependent world. The principles are intended to establish a framework for thought, discussion and action. We believe that they can be manifested in literally every aspect of our school life and that they provide a basis for constant reflection and self-evaluation in the process of continuous improvement.

Outstanding education
to educate, motivate, and support each child to achieve her/his full potential academically, socially, and emotionally in accord with the child's individual abilities, intelligences, and learning styles.

Respectful Community
to act and interact with respect for the dignity, worth and individuality of every child and adult.

Diversity
to maintain a highly diverse student enrolment, including children with a spectrum of learning needs.

Community outreach
to give liberally of ourselves personally, intellectually, and financially for the betterment of society.

Educational outreach
to serve as a model and resource for, and foster collaboration within, the wider educational community, and to advance the cause of educational reform in Hong Kong.

Creativity, innovation, flexibility
to be creative, innovative and challenge convention or the status quo in every aspect of school life.

Communication
to communicate with candor, precision and respect and on a frequent and timely basis.

Teaching and learning
to engage in contextual,authentic and meaningful learning experiences both within and beyond the classroom walls.

Putonghua
to develop and teach an exemplary Mandarin program that is contextual, experiential and authentic.

Parental involvement
to involve parents meaningfully and continuously in their child's education.

Professionalism
to work in an environment in which each member of the community, individually and collectively, fulfills their responsibilities with commitment, integrity and to the best of their abilities.

Finance
to exercise prudence in all expenditures, giving priority to resources that directly support and enhance student learning.

Shared vision
to recruit leadership, staff, student families, educational partners, and supporters who are committed to the Founding Principles.
